An International Collaborative Project Between Writers, Art Animators and Voice Actors.

ARTS By the People celebrates the art of collaboration between writers and filmmakers. Writers who submit their works to this project will see their words transformed into short films by animation students from various international animation schools. The goal of this unique event is to empower and inspire writers of all ages to tap into their inner creativity. Likewise, Moving Words encourages young animators to bring words to life through their visual art.

Moving Words is an ARTS By The People project made possible by a generous grant from The Santiago Abut Foundation, in loving memory of Santiago Abut.

Moving Words 2020 Submission Guidelines

Moving Words is a project that makes possible transnational collaboration amongst artists of prose, poetry, voice acting, and animation. Moving Words will intersect voices of all ages through writers whose submitted works will be transformed into short animated films by students at various colleges, universities, and art schools around the world. These writers, under the guidance of ARTS By The People’s writing scholar, together, will workshop their pieces, then have them voice-acted and subsequently animated by college film students. Our goal is to empower and inspire writers and artists of all ages to tap into their inner creativity and think in terms of visual imagery as well as the written word.

Submissions are open for Moving Words 2020 from April 1 to May 31. Artists may submit writing of any form—be it poetry or prose. A select few writers will be chosen by a panel of judges based on originality and creativity. We are looking for diversity of voice. Upon acceptance, writers will be asked to workshop their respective pieces to make them ready for animation. Over the months of August, September, and October each participant must be available on email to discuss the writing and revision process with our workshop leader. In addition, participants will be asked to attend two live workshops held on evening weekdays in the months of September and October to continue the workshop discussion. (Skype will be available to those not in the area of Morristown, New Jersey.) Please only send unpublished work. And keep in mind your participation in this project might require you to make cuts, changes, revisions, etcetera, to your piece.

We will consider all pieces for possible publication in our literary journal, The Platform Review.

Submission Guidelines:

Please keep in mind we are looking for pieces that harness energy through image and metaphor, as well as the musicality of language since the finished project will be produced as an animated film with an oral component.

For eligibility,

1.) Submit only one spoken-word piece through our Submittable link.

2.) Each piece should comfortably read under two (2) minutes in length.

3.) Submissions should be previously unpublished in any form (ie. print, blog, ezine, online journal) with the expectation of workshop.

4.) Include a cover letter that shares a brief background on your piece, your age, your location and contact information, as well as a brief (50-word) author’s bio.
